The market leader is of course MerCruiser. The Mercruiser 6 cylinder engines are very popular with American speedboats. These engines do not consume as much gasoline as the V8 engines and in addition they run much nicer than the 4 cylinder engines. Also, the 6 cylinder engines have more power. The engines that are most commonly used are the V6 262 CID, 4.3 Liter engines. Also common is the line 6 cyclinder 4.1 liter General Motors (GM) engine. Of course, there is also the V6 3.8 liter Buick engine. If you still have a boat with this Buick V6 then it becomes more difficult to maintain your boat. For this Buick there are almost no spare parts available anymore. However, we can still deliver enough parts for the Buick. Of course we have many parts available for the MerCruiser and GM engines, both as original and replacement parts.
Queue to the history of the MerCruiser 6 cylinder engines we have to go back to the 70's. Both the line 6 GM and the V6 Buick engines were used mainly in the 70's in the speedboats designed at that time. The V6 MerCruiser engine is slightly younger, as these engines were developed from the 70s onwards. However, the development of MerCruiser has not stood still and the current V6 cylinders of MerCruiser meet all modern needs and requirements: economical, good power and very clean!
The V6 Engine has an underlying camshaft, with 12 pushrods serving 12 valves. The Vortec version received a balance shaft in the 1990s. The engines have undergone a development since 2000. There are injection systems developed for these engines for more power and also a cleaner combustion. All parts are still available for these engines. A number of parts for the older MerCruiser engines are no longer available as original parts, however, there are always good replacement parts. These parts are really good quality and also have a really reasonable price.
One part that often causes problems with the somewhat older MerCruiser engines is with the MerCruiser Thunderbolt ignition the sensor under the rotor. There the original product is not cast in plastic. This allows for more rust to develop. The newer MerCruisers, from 2000, are less susceptible to rust because the sensor is cast in plastic. It is, however, a wear and tear part that you have to keep an eye on. This can be done during the annual maintenance of your boat. During this maintenance at least the fuel filter, oil filter and oil should be replaced. Important with the newer V6 MPI engines is to replace the fuel filter in the fuel pump. This is to prevent damage to the fuel system. If you have any questions about the maintenance of your V6 engine, please contact us
